Gordon & MacPhail's Discovery Sherry Miltonduff is a remarkable testament to the enduring legacy and rich history of the Gordon & MacPhail family. The story of this revered firm dates back to its founders, James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, who established it with a profound commitment to providing superior whisky at an accessible price while ensuring utmost customer satisfaction. Their dedication to whisky craftsmanship has been handed down through generations.

John Urquhart, an apprentice at the firm, soon began assisting in the selection and purchase of casks of malt whisky from local distilleries. This partnership grew, and with James Gordon's sudden passing in 1915, John Urquhart became the senior partner. In addition to the grocery business, John developed the whisky brokering side, specializing in single malt whiskies and bottling under license for renowned distilleries like Macallan, Glenlivet, Glen Grant, Linkwood, and Mortlach.

One significant innovation was the selection and filling of casks, predominantly Spanish oak ex-sherry casks, at various distilleries. These whiskies were matured for longer periods than was customary at the time. The torch was passed to the next generation when John Urquhart's son, George, and daughter, Betty, joined the firm in 1933.

In 1967, George Urquhart introduced an unprecedented range of single malts from different distilleries under the 'Connoisseur's Choice' brand, marking the beginning of a global interest in malt whisky. Subsequently, his children, Ian, David, and Michael, joined the family business, solidifying Gordon & MacPhail's role in keeping aged malt whisky afloat during the post-war decades.

Over the years, the family business evolved, becoming a limited company while retaining ownership and management within the family. The legacy continued, with the next generation of family members, including grandsons Stephen Rankin and Neil Urquhart, taking on key roles within the company.

Today, as Gordon & MacPhail moves into the technology-driven 21st century, other members of the fourth generation, such as Richard Urquhart and Stuart, carry forward the family tradition, ensuring that the heritage of fine malt whisky lives on.
