Why Is Aviation Gin So Popular?
History
Aviation Gin was created in 2006 in Portland, Oregon, by Ryan Magarian, a bartender, and Christian Krogstad (founder of House Spirits Distillery). Their goal was to design a gin that broke away from the classic London Dry tradition, where juniper dominates the palate. After extensive experimentation, they pioneered what is now widely known as the “American New Western Dry Gin”. Its rise accelerated in 2018, when actor Ryan Reynolds purchased a significant stake in the company, boosting it from a craft gin to an international best-seller. In 2020, it was acquired by Diageo, one of the world’s largest premium spirit conglomerates.
For those who appreciate well-crafted spirits in general, the 2 Gingers Irish whiskey is also a great pick from our collection.
Global Recognition and Awards
Wine Enthusiast rating: In 2012, Wine Enthusiast magazine awarded Aviation Gin a 97-point rating, the highest score the publication had given to any gin at the time.
Sales success: Aviation's creative, viral marketing campaigns have led to significant sales success. After a now-famous ad spoofed a controversial Peloton commercial, the brand achieved its greatest sales month in history.
Fastest-Growing Super-Premium Gin (2021–2023): Following Diageo’s acquisition and international expansion, Aviation became one of the fastest-growing gin brands in the super-premium category across the US, UK, and EU.
Bartenders’ Favourite
Balanced Botanical Profile: It is less juniper-forward and more rounded with lavender, cardamom, coriander, sarsaparilla, and citrus, creating a smooth character. This balance works perfectly in cocktails that require finesse.
Exceptional Versatility in Drinks: Bartenders prefer Aviation because it performs well in both:
-
Classic cocktails: Aviation, Bee's Knees, etc.
-
Modern craft creations: botanical spritzers, citrus-driven drinks, floral fusions.

The Art Of Aviation Gin Tasting
Tips for Tasting Aviation GIN Like a Pro
Choose the Proper Glassware
Go for a tulip-shaped glass or a Glencairn to help funnel the aromas toward your nose, allowing you to fully appreciate Aviation Gin’s layered notes of juniper, lavender, spice, and citrus.
Check the Temperature:
-
If you’re enjoying Aviation Gin neat:
Aviation shows its best flavours when served slightly chilled, as this softens the alcohol bite and lets the gin’s layered botanicals express themselves clearly. If you prefer it cooler, you can add one or two ice cubes.
-
If you’re using it in cocktails (like the Aviation cocktail):
For classic gin cocktails, the ingredients should be shaken or stirred with plenty of ice until the shaker or mixing glass turns frosty. This gives optimal chilling and a crisp flavour. Always serve the finished cocktail in a pre-chilled coupe or martini glass to keep the drink refreshing for longer.
Swirl Lightly
A gentle swirl aerates the spirit and releases its aromatic compounds without causing harsh vapours to dominate. This small motion helps highlight the gin’s balanced structure, revealing how the juniper, spice, and citrus interplay before you take the first sip.
Sip, Don’t Gulp
Allow the gin to coat your palate first and linger on for a moment. It always reveals its layers gradually, beginning with citrus and floral tones, followed by subtle spice and earthiness in the finish. Slow sipping gives you a clearer sense of its texture and warmth.
Cleanse Your Palate
Use plain water or a neutral snack like unsalted crackers to refresh your taste buds between sips. This ensures each tasting moment captures the gin’s true flavour profile without interference from lingering oils, salt, or strong food flavours.
