Eagle Rare is Buffalo Trace Distillery's age-stated, single-barrel Kentucky straight bourbon — a 10-year-old expression that has become one of the most consistently praised value bourbons in American whiskey and one of the most heavily allocated bottles in its price band.
About Eagle Rare
Originally launched by the Old Prentice Distillery in 1975 and later acquired by Sazerac, Eagle Rare is today produced, matured and bottled at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Kentucky. It uses Buffalo Trace's rye-recipe bourbon mashbill (mashbill #2), the same base used for Blanton's, Elmer T. Lee and the E.H. Taylor core range.
The flagship is Eagle Rare 10 Year — a single-barrel bourbon, aged no less than 10 years in new charred American oak, bottled at 90 proof. At that age statement and proof, it is widely regarded as a benchmark for accessible sipping bourbon.
Above the 10 Year sits Eagle Rare Double Eagle Very Rare, a 20-year-old single-barrel release presented in a crystal decanter and allocated in very small numbers. Earlier expressions like Eagle Rare 17 Year were part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection; the brand line-up has evolved over time.
What to expect
- 10 years old, single-barrel, 90 proof (45% ABV)
- Classic Buffalo Trace rye-recipe DNA — caramel, toffee, orange peel, leather, oak
- Balanced, medium-bodied, built for neat drinking and classic cocktails
- Allocated distribution — Eagle Rare 10 is frequently out of stock nationally
- Double Eagle Very Rare is a limited luxury release, priced and allocated accordingly
- Strong shelf-value reputation when priced at or near SRP
Buying guide
Eagle Rare 10 Year is the only bottle most buyers need from the line. At SRP it is one of the best price-to-age-statement ratios in American bourbon; if you see it in stock, it is usually a buy. For collectors and gifting at the top end, Double Eagle Very Rare is the prestige bottle — 20 years old, crystal decanter, limited production.
Because Eagle Rare is a single-barrel product, expect barrel-to-barrel variation: same age, same proof, same mashbill, but subtle differences in oak expression and fruit character between bottles. That is the nature of the category, not a defect.
