Shipping Eligibility

Liquor Geeks ships to the majority of US states, and your eligibility is confirmed the moment you enter a shipping address at checkout. Because alcohol-shipping laws are set by each state (and sometimes each county), we treat your checkout screen as the single source of truth for whether we can deliver to your door. If your address is eligible, you'll see a shipping rate appear; if it isn't, checkout will tell you before you pay. No guesswork, no surprise cancellations.

This page walks through how we verify eligibility, why alcohol shipping is regulated differently from ordinary e-commerce, and what to do if your state isn't currently serviceable. If you just want the short version: add something to your cart, start checkout, and you'll have a definitive answer in under thirty seconds.

How shipping eligibility works

Eligibility runs in three quick steps:

  1. You enter your shipping address on the checkout page. This can be your home, a friend's house if you're sending a gift, or a business address.
  2. Our system checks that address against our licensed shipping map in real time. The check considers state-level alcohol laws, our current carrier coverage, and whether the specific locality (including any dry counties or ZIP-code exclusions) can legally receive a retail shipment of spirits.
  3. You see the outcome instantly. Eligible addresses get live shipping rates and estimated delivery windows. Ineligible addresses get a clear message so you're not charged for an order we can't fulfill.

Because state rules and carrier partnerships evolve, the checkout result is always more current than any static list we could publish. If you were eligible last quarter and aren't today (or the reverse), checkout will reflect that.

Why state-by-state shipping is complicated

Alcohol is one of the most heavily regulated product categories in US commerce. Four overlapping layers determine whether a bottle can legally be sent to your address:

  • The three-tier system. After Prohibition, federal and state law organized alcohol into a strict producer → distributor → retailer structure. Every state implements this differently, and direct-to-consumer shipping from a licensed retailer like Liquor Geeks is permitted in some states and restricted in others.
  • State permits and licenses. Shipping spirits across state lines generally requires the retailer to hold the correct out-of-state permit, and those permits are issued, renewed, or occasionally paused by each state's alcohol control board.
  • Dry and moist counties. Even within a state that broadly allows alcohol delivery, individual counties, cities, and ZIP codes may prohibit or limit alcohol sales. Our system checks at the granularity the law actually uses, not just the state level.
  • Age verification and signature on delivery. Federal and state law both require that an adult aged 21 or older sign for every alcohol shipment. That carrier-level requirement applies in every state we ship to, without exception.

The result is a patchwork that genuinely does shift over time, which is exactly why we don't publish a fixed state list. Checkout is where the current answer lives.

What happens if my state isn't eligible

If checkout shows that we can't ship to your address right now, we want to give you an honest answer rather than a runaround:

  • Join our waitlist. If you create an account or subscribe to our email list, we'll notify you when eligibility opens up in your area. Permitting and carrier coverage do expand over time.
  • Ship to an eligible address. Many customers in restricted states have the order sent as a gift to a friend or family member in a state we currently serve. As long as the recipient is 21+ and signs for the package, this is a common and fully compliant option.
  • We won't invent a workaround we can't stand behind. If we can't ship to your state, we'll say so plainly instead of routing you to a questionable third-party reshipper. We'd rather lose the order than put you or the package at risk.

Frequently asked questions

Does Liquor Geeks ship to my state?

Very likely yes — we ship to the majority of US states. The fastest way to get a definitive answer is to add a bottle to your cart, proceed to checkout, and enter your shipping address. If we can ship to you, live shipping rates appear; if we can't, checkout will tell you before you pay.

Can I ship as a gift to someone in another state?

Yes, as long as the recipient's address is in a state we currently ship to and the recipient is 21 or older. Gift shipments are a great option if you're in a state we can't reach — enter the recipient's address at checkout and the eligibility check runs against their location, not yours.

Do you ship to dry counties?

No. Dry counties (and some moist or partially dry localities) prohibit the delivery of alcohol regardless of what the surrounding state allows. Our checkout check looks at your specific ZIP code and locality, so if you're in a dry area you'll see an ineligible message even if your state is generally serviceable.

Do I need to be 21 to receive the package?

Yes. Federal and state law require that every alcohol shipment be signed for by an adult aged 21 or older. The carrier will ask for a government-issued ID at the door and will not leave the package unattended. This applies to every order we ship, in every state we ship to.

What happens if nobody is home when the carrier delivers?

Because an adult signature is required, the carrier will not leave the package on the porch or with a neighbor. UPS and FedEx typically attempt delivery up to three times on consecutive business days. You can also redirect the package to a nearby carrier pickup location or a different eligible address through the carrier's tracking portal.

Do you deliver to PO Boxes?

No. Major carriers like UPS and FedEx do not deliver alcohol to PO Boxes, APO/FPO addresses, or mail-forwarding services, regardless of state. Please use a residential or commercial street address where an adult 21+ can sign for the package.

What carriers do you use?

We ship with licensed carriers (primarily UPS and FedEx) that are authorized to handle alcoholic beverages and that enforce adult-signature delivery. The specific carrier assigned to your order depends on your destination, the size of the shipment, and current service levels in your area.

Do you ship internationally?

No. Liquor Geeks ships within the United States only. We don't ship to Canada, Mexico, the UK, the EU, or any other international destination, and we don't ship to US territories where direct-to-consumer alcohol delivery isn't permitted. If that changes, we'll update this page.

Can I redirect a shipment after it's sent?

Sometimes — it depends on the carrier and the stage of transit. Alcohol shipments have tighter redirect rules than ordinary parcels because the new address still has to be eligible and still has to accept an adult-signature delivery. Contact our support team as soon as possible and we'll coordinate with the carrier on what's possible.

What about Alaska and Hawaii?

Rather than publish a fixed list, we let checkout answer this for every state, including Alaska and Hawaii. Enter your shipping address at checkout and you'll see immediately whether we can deliver to you today. Eligibility for non-contiguous states in particular can depend on carrier coverage, which is why checkout is always the authoritative source.
