Alfred Schladerer Schwarzwälder Kirschwasser is a benchmark German cherry brandy produced in Staufen, at the edge of the Black Forest, where the Schladerer family has distilled fruit eaux-de-vie since 1844. Made from ripe, hand-picked Black Forest cherries that are fermented whole—pit and all—then twice-distilled in copper stills, Schladerer Kirsch is the reference point for authentic Kirschwasser and a staple of classic European pastry kitchens.
The nose is pure: fresh cherry, almond blossom, and the faintly nutty, marzipan-like note that comes from distilling with the pits intact. On the palate it's crystal-clear, dry, and intensely aromatic—stone fruit and almond run through a light, clean spirit with a long, fragrant finish that pulls back toward cherry skin and soft spice. At 80 proof, it drinks elegant rather than hot.
Serve Schladerer Kirsch well-chilled in a small tulip glass after a meal, or use it as a cooking essential—classic Black Forest cake, cheese fondue, and poached cherries all lean on Kirschwasser for their signature lift. A small pour goes a long way.

Why Liquor Geeks recommends it
Kirschwasser is one of the purest expressions of fruit you can pour, and this one comes from the Schladerer family in Staufen, at the edge of the Black Forest, where they have distilled fruit eaux-de-vie since 1844. Ripe, hand-picked Black Forest cherries are fermented whole, pits included, then twice-distilled in copper stills and bottled unaged and crystal clear. That pit-in method gives the spirit its signature. Fresh cherry comes first, then almond blossom and a soft marzipan note. The palate is dry and clean, with a long, fragrant finish that drifts toward cherry skin and gentle spice. It suits curious drinkers discovering eaux-de-vie as a chilled after-dinner sip. It also earns a permanent spot with home bakers and cooks, since Black Forest cake, cheese fondue and poached cherries all lean on real Kirsch for their lift. We carry it because it shows the classic German cherry brandy style with clarity and restraint, and a small pour goes a long way.
Pairs well with
- Classic Black Forest cake — The spirit's pure cherry and almond notes echo the cake's cherries and add the signature Kirsch lift to the cream and sponge.
- Cheese fondue evening — A dry, aromatic splash of Kirsch brightens the melted cheese, and a chilled pour afterward makes a fitting digestif.
- Roast duck with cherry sauce — Its ripe stone fruit character deepens a cherry sauce and stands up to rich poultry or game.

What exactly is this Kirschwasser made from?
It is made from ripe, hand-picked Black Forest cherries. The cherries are fermented whole, pits and all, then twice-distilled in copper stills. The spirit is unaged and bottled crystal clear, so the flavor comes entirely from the fruit.
Why does it taste of almond and marzipan if it is a cherry brandy?
Why does it taste of almond and marzipan if it is a cherry brandy?
The faintly nutty, marzipan-like note comes from distilling the cherries with their pits intact. It sits behind the fresh cherry aroma and runs through the palate as a delicate almond undertone.
Is it sweet?
Is it sweet?
No. The palate is dry and intensely aromatic. It is rich with cherry but not overly sweet, and a well-balanced acidity keeps it lively. The spirit is light and clean, finishing long and fragrant with cherry skin and soft spice.
Can I use it in cooking and cocktails, or is it only for sipping?
