Everything for a proper Old Fashioned, nothing you don't need: a bottle of Buffalo Trace, a pair of heavy rocks glasses, Peychaud's bitters, Above Board simple syrup, Starlino maraschino cherries and a 2-inch ice cube tray.

Stir 2 oz bourbon with a bar spoon of syrup and three dashes of bitters over one big cube, drop a cherry in, done. The classic gift for the person who says they like bourbon but has never made one at home.

Tasting Notes

Color: Buffalo Trace bourbon is a deep amber; the finished drink turns a clear russet over a single large cube.

Nose: Buffalo Trace brings vanilla, mint, molasses and brown sugar; Peychaud's adds anise and cherry; the Above Board syrup keeps it clean and the Starlino cherry finishes with a sweet, almond-tinged aroma.

Palate: Balanced and sweet-forward with the bourbon's caramel and oak up front, a gentle bitter backbone from the Peychaud's, and a soft, boozy cherry at the bottom of the glass.
