“Balade,” meaning “wandering” in French, is a limited-production Pinot Noir from Belle Glos, crafted under the direction of Joe Wagner. Unlike the house’s vineyard-designated wines, Balade reflects an annual exploration of standout coastal sites, resulting in a unique, ever-evolving expression. Sourced from the cool-climate Santa Maria Valley, the 2022 vintage delivers a bold, fruit-driven style often described as a “Pinot for Cabernet lovers”—rich, structured, and deeply flavored while maintaining varietal character.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Medium to deep ruby with a vibrant, polished sheen.

Aroma: Opulent and layered, opening with blackberry jam and baked plum. Notes of toasted brioche and oak unfold alongside baking spices, rose petal, and violet. A distinctive cherry cola nuance adds depth and intrigue.

Palate: Bold and full-bodied for Pinot Noir, with an immediate burst of black plum, stewed cherry, and boysenberry. The mid-palate reveals a rich, almost French toast-like warmth, accented by spice and subtle sweetness. Firm, slightly sappy tannins provide structure, while hints of black pepper, cinnamon, and bay leaf bring balance and complexity.

Finish: Moderately long and savory, with lingering dried cherry, spice, and a gentle touch of wood smoke. The tannins hold through the finish, leaving a slightly toasty, structured impression.
