Dominus 2023, Christian Moueix's Napa Valley estate wine. 97 points, Wine Spectator.
Dominus comes from the historic Napanook vineyard in Yountville, dry-farmed by Christian Moueix of Pomerol fame. The 2023 blends 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in 40% new French oak. It was a long, moderate year: 51 inches of rain refilled the soils, veraison came about two weeks late, and the abundant crop was picked between October 7 and 18. Wine Spectator (97 points) calls it "the rare Napa Cab that seems intent on discretion," noting red and black currant, tobacco, loam and warm stone that open with air. Jeb Dunnuck also gave it 97 points for its purity and refinement. Wine Spectator rates it best from 2030 through 2048, though Dunnuck finds this vintage unusually charming and forward already. 15.0% ABV, 750ml.
