Quintessa is a single biodynamic estate on the Rutherford Bench, and the 2023 is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Carménère, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, aged 22 months in French oak (60% new) with a small share in terracotta amphora. After three years of drought, a wet winter refilled the estate's lake and soils, a cool spring delayed bud break by two to three weeks, and a summer free of heat spikes let the fruit ripen slowly, with picking running from September 22 to October 30. Jonathan Cristaldi of Decanter (99 points) calls it "incredibly elegant and built for long-term cellaring," and James Suckling (99 points) adds, "What an exceptional release." Wine Spectator rates it best from 2027 through 2040, while Jeb Dunnuck suggests drinking it from 2026 to 2036. 14.5% ABV, 750ml.
