Scapa 21 Year Old Single Malt Scotch comes from the Scapa distillery on Orkney, founded in 1885 on the shore of Scapa Flow and one of the two northernmost distilleries in Scotland. Scapa runs an unusual Lomond wash still that produces a heavier, fruitier spirit, and its whisky is unpeated, so the island character shows up as sea air and heather rather than smoke.

Twenty-one years in first-fill American oak give this bottling a deep honeyed weight: heather honey, baked orchard fruit and vanilla on the nose, then toffee, dried apricot, gentle oak spice and a faint saline edge on the palate. The finish is long, warming and softly sweet. Pour it neat in a Glencairn and give it a few minutes in the glass; a drop of water opens the fruit.

Scapa releases very little at this age, and older Orkney malt of this style is hard to find. If you enjoy Highland Park without the peat, or older Speyside malts matured in bourbon wood, this is a natural next bottle.

Why Liquor Geeks recommends it

This is unpeated island whisky with real age behind it: twenty-one years in first-fill American oak at the Scapa distillery on Orkney, founded in 1885 on the shore of Scapa Flow. Scapa runs an unusual Lomond wash still that yields a heavier, fruitier spirit. With no peat involved, the island shows up as sea air and heather rather than smoke. The nose brings heather honey, baked orchard fruit and vanilla. The palate turns to toffee, dried apricot, gentle oak spice and a faint saline edge, and the finish is long, warming and softly sweet. It suits the collector who wants an older Orkney malt outside the usual smoky island profile. It also suits the drinker who loves mature bourbon-cask Speyside and wants to taste what a coastal distillery does with the same wood. This is a whisky for the neat pour, not the mixing glass. We carry it because Scapa releases very little at this age, and it is a distinctive expression of a small northern distillery's house style.

Pairs well with

  • Apricot and almond tart — The tart's stone fruit and buttery pastry echo the whisky's dried apricot, honey and toffee notes.
  • Smoked salmon on rye — The whisky's faint saline edge and honeyed sweetness play nicely against rich, salty fish.
  • Milestone celebration toast — A twenty-one-year-old Orkney malt with a long, warming finish is made for slow sipping when the occasion deserves it.

Questions about this bottle

Is Scapa 21 Year Old smoky or peated?

No. Scapa's whisky is unpeated, so its Orkney island character comes through as sea air and heather rather than smoke. On the palate that coastal influence appears as a faint saline edge beneath the honey and fruit.

What does Scapa 21 taste like?

Expect heather honey, baked orchard fruit and vanilla on the nose, then toffee, dried apricot, gentle oak spice and a light saline note on the palate. The finish is long, warming and softly sweet, with a deep honeyed weight throughout.

How should I drink it?

Pour it neat in a Glencairn glass and give it a few minutes to open up. A drop of water helps bring the fruit forward. At this age and in this style, it is best enjoyed as a sipping whisky rather than in cocktails.

How was it matured, and what size is the bottle?

It spent twenty-one years in first-fill American oak, which gives it vanilla, toffee and a rich honeyed character. The bottle holds 700 ml.
