Founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher, the area's original name, "Maghellan," was derived from the Gallic word "magh," meaning fertile ground, and "Ellan," linked to Monk St. Fillan, whose church once stood on The Macallan Estate grounds until 1400. Over centuries, local farmers have practiced the art of whisky-making on their Speyside farms during the quieter winter months.

As wood is a natural material, each tree imparts its unique flavors and colors to the whisky during maturation. The skill of The Macallan's whisky makers ensures consistency in color from bottling to bottling, accomplished through the thoughtful selection and management of casks, each contributing its spectrum of natural color to The Macallan single malt. The Macallan collaborates closely with fully integrated "tree to finished seasoned cask" companies in Spain, working to identify oak trees in the northern Spanish forests. These trees are felled, the oak staves are sawn and air-dried before being transported to southern Spain for further air-drying, reducing moisture. The casks are then seasoned for 18 months before their journey to Scotland, where they are filled with The Macallan's "new make" spirit.
